Vishmi Helaratne (b. New Zealand,1995) is a multidisciplinary artist of Sri Lankan heritage. Spanning between drawing, performance, installation and public practices within communities. Her work focuses on exploring the idea of co-authorship within a socially constructed work as a means of forming new social, cultural and political relations, making viewers active producers of the work. She aims to directly focus on this notion of the ‘social’ within an artwork introducing new methods that purely rely on community, conversation and participation. Documentation of social encounters is utilised to situate the artist in the nexus of these gestural acts. Helaratne has been involved in various group shows, galleries include Museum Of Contemporary Art Sydney, UNSW Galleries, AD SPACE, and The Down/Under Space.
